Prof. Stavros A. Karkanis was born in 1963. He holds B.Sc. in Mathematics (1986) from University of Athens and Ph.D. (1995) from the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Athens, entitled “Recognition of Texture in Digital Images Supported by Multiprocessor Architectures.”. From the year 2002 till today he is Professor to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Applied Sciences of Central Greece (former TEI of Lamia). He has worked for more that 11 years in the private sector in various companies as HITEC SA, ORASIS-IT Ltd., Intrasoft SA in the period from 1987 to 1998. His involvement was mainly a) in research projects funded by European or national sources like GSRT and b) as a special assistant / senior consultant in IT product development projects. During the period 1994- 2001 he worked as a consultant researcher with the Laboratory for Optoelectronics, Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Athens in research projects of the European Commission. In the period from 1996 to 1998 he worked as a senior researcher with the Laboratory of System Reliability for Industrial Security, Institute of Nuclear Technology – Radiation Protection, NCSR “Demokritos”. The funded projects are included in the corresponding financial framework of the European Union such as FP7, ISP, BCR, ESPRIT, IMT, BRITE-EURAM, etc. but also to national funded programs such PENED, PAVE, OP, NSRF etc. He has also served on committees (steering committees) after a call for the development of financial research framework of the European Union as BRITE-EURAM and IMT of XII N / Directorate.
George C. Alexandropoulos was born in Athens, Greece, in 1980. He received the Engineering Diploma degree in computer engineering and informatics, the M.A.Sc. degree (with distinction) in signal processing and communications, and the Ph.D. degree in wireless communications from the University of Patras (UoP), Rio-Patras, Greece, in 2003, 2005, and 2010, respectively. From 2001 to 2014, he has held research positions at various Greek universities and research institutes (UoP, University of Peloponnese, Technical University of Crete, National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos,” National Observatory of Athens, and the Athens Information Technology Center for Research and Education), where he technically managed several national, European, and international R&D projects. From 2014 till January 2019, he was Senior Research Engineer at the Mathematical and Algorithmic Sciences Lab, Paris Research Center, Huawei Technologies France delivering RAN solutions for 5G NR and beyond. Currently, he is Assistant Professor for communication systems and signal processing at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. His research and development activities span the general areas of algorithmic design, optimization, and performance analysis for wireless communication networks with emphasis on multi-antenna systems, transceiver hardware architectures and reconfigurable metasurfaces, high frequency communications, and distributed machine learning algorithms. Prof. Alexandropoulos is a Senior Member of the IEEE Communications, Signal Processing, and Information Theory Societies as well as a Professional Engineer of the Technical Chamber of Greece. He has received scholarships for his postgraduate and PhD studies, the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award 2010 by a Greek University in the fields of informatics and telecommunications, and the IEEE Communications Society Best Young Professional in Industry Award 2018.
