Logistics and the supply chain management in general is a rapidly growing sector in Greece, posing new challenges regarding the updating of traditional workflows, reduction of operational cost and increase of the carrying capacity of relevant companies. The proposed project will contribute towards this direction, and especially towards supporting very small companies in the field of specialized cargo handling logistics with a novel information system, capable of analysing the state of operations and reaching optimal decision-making. In more detail, a consortium of a small logistics management company (RMR), an expert research institution in information systems (Dept. of Informatics, Ionian University) and the Institute for Entrepreneurship Development will focus on particular needs of RMR and more general operational policies of a relevant company, towards designing and developing of a decision-making information system, which will improve the carrying-capacity of assumed contracts with parallel reduction of required resources/operational costs, while satisfying additional quality-of-service criteria, e.g., bounded delivery times. In order to achieve this goal, the functional requirements of RMR and customer requests/constraints will be analyzed on a daily basis, an efficient data collection-knowledge representation will be developed and a novel routing-scheduling algorithm based on the backpressure technique will be designed and developed. Finally, a result-interpretation platform allowing decision-making will be created. The three partners of the consortium will act complementary ensuring two-way knowledge transfer, the successful design, development and demonstration of the complete system, as well as the further financial and commercial exploitation of the system within the company, and more general the holistic development of business activities and the support of quality improvement and quantitative increase of RMR responsiveness in european and international policies. The results of the proposed project will be key for the future expansion of RMR in a very competitive environment, as well as for the broader adoption (through the Institute for Entrepreneurship Development) of a new strategy for optimizing supply chain problems, a necessity for the further expansion of the sector to the scales desired by all the involved stakeholders.

The EN.I.R.I.S.S.T operation is the extension of the unique national research infrastructure in the fields of shipping, supply chain and transport in Greece EN.I.R.I.S.S.T which is already implemented with limited resources by 19 partners belonging to 11 Universities and national research institutes. The horizontal expansion of the national infrastructure EN.I.R.I.S.S.T aims at the formation of a diverse intelligent platform with research and business orientation. The platform’s services combine analytics and data visualization and mining techniques to support key economic activities, especially small and medium-sized enterprises which make up the bulk of the economic backbone of less-favored regions. EN.IRISST is designed to support the goals of smart specialization (RIS3) of the regions of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Peloponnese, North Aegean and Ionian Islands while strengthening with specific services the coordination of public services and the taking of relevant policy decisions in the . EN.IRISST through the new services it will develop in the fields of transport, supply chain (Logistics), ports, shipping and tourism will provide its researchers with information and tools on: a) the evaluation of port services, b) the use of new technologies in logistics, freight and passenger transport, c) the intermodality and interoperability of transport nodes (interoperability) and main infrastructure of culture and tourism and d) an electronic treasure trove of shipping documents. The EN.I.R.I.S.S.T. will provide additional opportunities and services to academia, researchers, professional associations, private and public companies, infrastructure operators, independent authorities, public bodies and governments, to support original research, investment plans and policies. It will also thematically and geographically complete the already implemented research infrastructure, a multidimensional institution of economic and research development for Greece, participating in the creation of new and the strengthening of existing networks at local, regional and national level that will ensure the flow of knowledge and information, connecting with global networks aimed at attracting highly specialized human capital in Greece by strengthening the human research potential in the field of transport, logistics, ports, shipping, tourism and connecting it with potential in the field of software development and with representatives of various branches. The specialization in the above-mentioned scientific areas of the four main partners will promote regional research excellence and develop powerful tools to support sustainable smart specialization through the development of activities identified in the context of regional research and development strategies. in the regions of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Peloponnese, North Aegean and Ionian Islands.

As a result of the extensive work that has been performed by the Corfu Ephorate of Antiquities over the recent years, as well as the contribution of the Ionian University to the relevant research area, today there is a large amount of cultural data available in Corfu. The proposed project aims in particular to focus on monumental facilities of Mon Repos in real conditions, so that its visitors can gain the so-called “cultural experience” through an innovative, technological approach, but also broaden their knowledge on the subject. In the context of the project, it is proposed to exploit the area of Mon Repos and the corresponding museum, utilizing the various possibilities of Augmented Reality-AR. The open space of the Mon Repos estate is an ideal environment for implementing Augmented Reality facilities, since the physical structure is not intact, and the daily routines of the past are no longer tangible. On the other hand, an enclosed space (such as the Mon Repos Museum), which is in direct contact with the open space, offers great opportunities, through the utilization of new technologies, to familiarize visitors with the surroundings, but also on demonstration and learning processes for pupils, students or young scientists. Field immersive technologies can be used to “walk” in the 3d space at various moments of its timeline. At the same time, through serious games, the visitor will “play” with the correct methods of conservation of the monument and will understand the difficulties of historians and conservators, while a personalized treasure hunt, through the search for various elements, will bring together the interested person with cultural elements of the past, but also of the newer history of the region. A Workspace / Open Lab will be created as part of the Museum. In this area, specialties dealing with the emergence of the monument will come into contact, students, or even young scientists will have the opportunity to be informed, to see in real life the work of experienced professionals and to “participate” virtually in the processes. The site will have equipment available to visitors (e.g., 3d printers). They will also come alive with the help of the AR, moments from the life of the building in earlier times. In this context, this project proposes a combination of frontier research in the fields of knowledge representation and reasoning, big data and human-computer interaction for the development of innovative methods and software that intelligently exploits cultural data. To this end, the project will be based on the collaboration of Sieben SME, providing IT services, with experienced researchers from the Ionian University and the Corfu Ephorate of Antiquities. The ultimate goal is both the development of application-oriented infrastructure services and an integrated application that provides value-added services for the search, presentation and creative re-use of cultural content with gaming elements.

The BYRON project is about designing and developing an experiential educational game. If the advent of moving images characterized 20th century societies, the 21st focuses on the direct involvement of people in the production and consumption of digital content. Digital games are the most popular and popular form of new media, enhancing active player engagement. It is not, however, a coincidence that systematic scientific research into the exploitation of historical themes, the ways of historical representation, of historical experience and learning through them, would be a new form of historical text, which is popular and changing. the way History is perceived by the general public. Digital games as a means of mediating knowledge are capable of critically developing what has happened in the past, while in the case of serious games they incorporate pedagogical techniques to teach players knowledge and skills. Understanding the needs of the modern era, and also fortunate to have the Ionian University Department of Informatics and History, we were led to set up an interdisciplinary research team that has been studying digital games in recent years in relation to digital games , developing interaction between subjects and their content, expanding their use in education. The result of this study was the design of a serious game on the Greek Revolution, combining knowledge from research into digital games and historical social groups from a digital portraiture database. The Byron Proposal aims at an innovative approach to the Greek Revolution by highlighting the social forces that have contributed to its launch and development, targeting both students and the general public. Users of the game can have fun gathering interesting information and exploring how historically gaining societies and social groups without concentrated means of power begin the Revolution and begin to form a state.

Hermes project aims at improving the protection, management and exploitation of important biodiversity ecosystems through the development of digital services. The individual objectives of the project are summarized as follows:
– Enhancement and protection of the Ionian natural landscape, sustainable development and income support for the islands’ population. Ionian University leads the effort and propose actions to promote, inform and disseminate information and knowledge, as well as raise awareness on biodiversity issues within the boundaries of the Region of Ionian Islands.
– Implement a prototype digital platform that will include information on the entire ecosystems of the Ionian Islands through appropriate display tools tailored to the specific features of these protected areas.
– Utilization of crowd-sourcing technologies and methodologies with the aim of bringing local communities and visitors together, as well as shaping the actions according to them.
– Study of methods for the smooth and life-long integration of the natural objects into the wider tourism and tourist flow, with emphasis on both the sensitization of the latter and the developmental character of the local communities.
– Producing an improved digital product to raise the Region of Ionian Islands as a major attraction for alternative tourism in the Eastern Mediterranean.
– Enhancement of the natural wealth of areas of interest for the anticipated improvement of the image of the Region of Ionian Islands with the use of New Media (Internet, “smart” mobile, multimedia, etc.).
– Organization of workshops, production of printed material and promotional publications for the dissemination of the results of biodiversity value protection and the natural wealth of the Ionian Islands.
– Adoption and implementation of an integrated communication strategy aimed at highlighting the central role of Managing Authorities in the management and protection of biodiversity at the Region of Ionian Islands, as well as in enhancing the participatory process of either organized groups or simple citizens in their management and protection.

CERETAB aims to support the improvement of border surveillance by enhancing cooperation between 2 EU Member States, Greece (EL) & Cyprus (CY), which over the recent years suffer from heavy irregular migration attempts via the Mediterranean sea, as well as cross-border crime. The unique geographical position of both countries in the South Eastern end of the EU renders them as significant targets for smuggling groups, using small maritime vessels. The overall objective is to increase the situational awareness within the broad area defined by the Greek-Cypriot sea borders, by the improvement of the cooperation and the information exchange of the Greek-Cypriot National Coordination Centres (NCCs). More specifically, the area between Cyprus and Greece is considered a sea route for suspected vessels moving from Turkey, Syria & Lebanon towards Europe and it is widely acknowledged that it lacks proper monitoring. Thus, timely effective and secure exchange of information & coordination between the relevant authorities of the 2 countries is of utmost importance. The latter will be implemented within CERETAB project through the utilization of new, state-of-the-art border surveillance technologies, such as the deployment of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs), that facilitate information exchange, in order to prevent cross border crime & irregular migration, while optimizing the common efforts for saving lives of people in distress at sea, e.g., in Search And Rescue (SAR) incidents. In line with Article 9(9) & (10) of Reg. (EU) No 1052/2013 on the exchange of situational pictures of neighboring border sections, CERETAB will provide an integrated ICT platform that will enable both neighboring countries to exchange and share directly & in near real-time incident-related information, such as the 2 NCCs situational picture, in order to promote a more coherent approach on migration management (including SAR incidents), and to fight irregular migration and cross-border crime.

As the result of the digitisation and aggregation efforts by a number of stakeholders in cultural sector, from museums and archives to archaeological schools as well as simple end-users within the last years, a large amount of digital cultural heritage in different forms has become available on the Web. However, despite the great potential for creatively reusing this data in order to build innovative applications in the fields of culture, tourism, marketing etc., the digitised cultural content remains to a large extent unexploited. Interested stakeholders, be it private enterprises (e.g., creative industries, tourist operators, IT companies) or public or non-profit organisations (e.g. foundations, local government etc) usually lack the knowledge and capacity required to benefit from the available cultural content, open or not, depending on their needs and goals. On the other hand, in the context of research-oriented projects as well as in scientific conferences and journals, there have been proposed and tested novel ideas and methods that use cutting-edge technology in order to facilitate the retrieval, meaning extraction, organisation and creative reuse of digital cultural heritage. Within this framework, the current project seeks to combine applied research in the fields of knowledge representation and reasoning, big data and human-computer interaction in order to develop innovative methods and software for the smart exploitation of cultural content. To this end, the project will resort to the collaboration between SME Siliddop, which provides IT services, and experienced scientists from EPISEY-NTUA and the Ionian University. This collaboration will lead to the development of a) a set of infrastructure services (API) and b) a web platform that offers added-value services for the search, management, presentation and creative reuse of cultural content, such as the creation of digital exhibitions and storytelling tools, as well as the launching of crowdsourcing campaigns with gamification elements.

The focus of the POLYSEMI project is the creation of an innovative Park of literary travels of Greece and Magna Graecia, based on the notion of literature as a verbal expression of the territory. This notion ensures – thanks to its scientific component – the cultural substance of the initiatives, for the constant and organic connection between the study of the shared Adriatic-Ionian space (literature, art, history, landscape, crops, material culture, folklore) with the development of a model of sustainable literary tourism, interested in the places identity, on the tracks of the writers’ travel diaries, like a driving force for the economic and territorial growth. Literary itineraries will start from the writers’ travel diaries found on the Web and in the territory trought various paths. A digital library of travel literature, a spread of books and iconographic material, shows, events, exhibitions, etc. will be realized. With Institutions (legally supported), local Enterprises (reception, crafts, wine and food, agriculture, etc.) and associations, will be created a System of Network, in which everyone will have its own pages and an international showcase on the Park Portal, focusing mainly on the IT dissemination/innovation. It will be important to ensure an international launch of the area, the spread of innovative and shared strategic and management models and the increase of female and youth employment. Intangible literary resources of culture will become the driver of a virtuous circuit aimed at enhancing the value of human resources and cultural and economic assets of the territory, connecting them organically, as all aspects of the places visited in the travel diaries (aesthetic, anthropological, economic and folkloristic) seem to be organically linked. The itineraries include, besides various kinds of paths, for disadvantaged social groups too, the dramatization of ancient events and permanent costume street theatre, acted by the inhabitants of villages and historic centers. Stages: the specific experience and skills acquired by the project staff will allow an immediate and simultaneous start – with particularly incisive actions carried out by the management in the first months – for many cross-borders activities closely interrelated, bibliographical research activities, realization of itineraries, setting up of the System of Networks of the Park and of lifelong learning activities (see WP descriptions). From April 2019 the Park will be able to welcome tourists and populations, with the first events and cultural and entertainment initiatives, whereas the activities will be gradually implemented, reserving some of them to specific moments that will be identified during the two years of the project, until reaching the certainty, at the end of the project, to ensure the sustainability and continuity of the Park and its Portal over time.

The main objective of the project is to develop research and innovative processes for the export of applied results and support for small local wine growers who, with appropriate services, tools and equipment, will be able to choose quickly, efficiently and with sufficient accuracy appropriate biotypes or even new varieties for their vineyards based on soil and other characteristics. Additionally, the proposed system also aims to improve the yield of existing crops through specific proposals, will be fully expandable, and a particularly important advantage is that it will be based on low cost equipment. To achieve this goal, we will invest in the extensive research potential of the Ionian University, which will develop state-of-the-art technology that will be affordable and easy to use and will make a difference in the cultivation process by freeing up time and resources from growers.

TraMOOC (Translation for Massive Open Online Courses) is a Horizon 2020 collaborative project that developed reliable machine Translation for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The main result of the project is an online translation platform, which utilized a wide set of linguistic infrastructure tools and resources in order to provide accurate and coherent translation to its end users. Platform for trans-Academic Cooperation in Innovation

IPA Adriatic Cross-Border Cooperation 2007-2013, http://www.pacinno.eu/

PACiNNO is a collaboration platform that connects into a single regional innovation system researchers and academic institutions, policy makers, and innovative companies of eight countries belonging to the Adriatic region (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia). The goal of PACiNNO was to establish a platform for cooperation in research and innovation covering the whole Adriatic region. PACiNNO targeted research institutions, policy makers and business entities, through three key areas of action: research of innovation on micro, meso and macro level, training of human resources and knowledge and technology transfer. The project helped developing new bridges between the research and scientific activities, carried out at academic institutions, and the economic system, with specific reference to the technological needs of SMEs. Overall, the project research and practical activities have involved more than 1.100 SMEs, 200 start-up companies, 40 academic researchers and 250 young entrepreneurs. Social innovation and social entrepreneurship have received particular attention in PACiNNO research activities. More generally, PACiNNO was aimed at overcoming the main obstacles and barriers to the economic development of the Adriatic countries, fostering the competitiveness of their minor firms (both in the high-tech fields and in the traditional industries), and promoting the creation of innovative start-ups, increasing the innovation capacity of the Adriatic Region and enabling the transfer of best practices across particular countries of the Region.

Archimedes III, National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) 2007-2013

PromO(nto)tion proposes the development of a semantic thesaurus of concepts that are related to the content and other metadata of ad videos. Ad designers will be able to utilize the thesaurus as a support tool and as a brainstorming kit for creating novel spots, by taking into account previous spots of related products as well as their evaluation feedback by the consumers themselves. This project is interdisciplinary, as its scientific tasks and interests stand at the borderline between several areas, namely marketing, ad design and consumer behavior study, software engineering, game development and interface design, ontology engineering and semantic representation. For creating the tool, PromO(nto)tion will make use of novel game development technologies. A user-friendly entertaining video game will be designed, and users will be asked to indirectly (by playing the game) answer questions and quizzes regarding the content and other metadata of ad videos that are available online. Competing against other players and against time, the player will provide, through his answers, a set of terms that describe (annotate) the ad video displayed in the game, as well as his personal opinion on the ad video. The videogame, House of Ads, can be downloaded here. In order for the game to run, a web server is needed, such as XAMPP. Create a folder in the htdocs folder and place all game files in it. Start the server, browse to http://localhost/[name_of_your_folder] and enjoy! With the help of an ontology development platform, the collected concepts will then be organized into a hierarchical structure (ontology), and they will be assigned semantic features, forming a semantic thesaurus that will link terms and concepts via semantic relations and at the same time contain statistical data regarding the terms (e.g. frequency of use, evaluation statistics etc). Finally, an online user-friendly interface will provide access to the tool to any ad designer, anywhere, anytime.
